Potatoes produce fruits that look like small green tomatoes!
Watch out, your potatoes might be trying to kill you!
Occasionally, gardeners find small, round, green, tomato-like fruit on their potato plants. They are actually the true fruit of the potato plant; the edible tubers (aka: “potatoes”) are actually enlarged, underground stems. Normally, most potato flowers dry up and fall off the plant without setting fruit, but sometimes the system glitches.
The potato fruit, as well as the plant itself, contain large amounts of solanine-a poisonous alkaloid. Therefore, these small fruits shouldn’t become a part of your potato salad. The variety of “Yukon Gold” produces fruit more heavily that most varieties.
