When You See What They Found At This Construction Site, Your Heart Will Break

Deforestation in Australia has caused animal populations to dwindle. Their habitats are destroyed every day to make room for commercial development, but the critters that call these areas home are the ones paying the ultimate price.

This young female koala, now called Ash, was discovered wandering alone in the land that used to be her home. She had only recently grown old enough to separate from her mother, and she didn’t know where else to go.

Rescuers say that she was disoriented, dehydrated, and in need of a meal.

Thousands of birds, reptiles, kangaroos, wallabies, and other animals likely died during the deforestation of this area.

Thank goodness this sweet girl was spared from reaching the same sad fate.

Ash was given a big bucket of eucalyptus leaves, and she’s now receiving 24-hour care. Once she’s a bit stronger, they’ll transfer her to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary for further rehabilitation.

These Construction Workers Gave A Sick Little Girl The Gift Of Friendship

Construction workers get a reputation for being pretty tough dudes. They work in all sorts of weather, slam hammers into things, and lift heavy stuff all day. It’s a very macho job. But even the most macho man has a soft side. That’s definitely the case for two construction workers in St. Louis, Missouri.

Travis Barnes and Greg Combs were working on a construction project across the street from a children’s hospital, and they made a point to wave at the kids every day. But one day, a little girl decided to wave back.

That is Vivian Keith, and she’s undergoing treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Vivian’s only link to the outside world was looking out the window at the construction workers. They began to wave to each other every day, and after a few months, they were all able to meet.

The small things can make the biggest impact. These construction workers are strong guys, but little Vivian has a different kind of strength. It’s clear that when it comes to this unlikely crew, there’s plenty of inspiration to go around.

They Weren't Making The Most Of Their Backyard, So Dad Decided To Do Something

One summer day, Reddit user and father of two itsjoeco decided that his backyard could be a little more kid-friendly. So he did like many other parents have done before him and built his kids an awesome playground. But, like many other moms and dads find, his backyard needed a bit of a clean before anything could be done...

The corner of the yard was unused and overgrown.

The thicket and center tree were removed to make room for what was to come.

The tree was cut into logs. Some could be reused, while others were carted off to the local conservation center for composting.

While his wife was a bit concerned about the leftover wood, itsjoeco found a perfect use for the hollow pieces of the trunk.

Next, the overgrowth, mostly consisting of (invasive) bamboo, was removed.

Bamboo is hard to get rid of, so we’ll see what happens next spring!

Next, it was time to learn about history! No, really.

According to itsjoeco, his yard used to be a pond in the 1920s. In 1929, the town tore down its train station and used it to fill in this pond. That meant while they were digging, the family found pieces of the train station all over the place.

…As well as what they think is a Boy Scout belt buckle.

If we later run a story about a family whose playground is haunted by the ghost of a Boy Scout, you’ll know why. (We’re kidding.)

Finally, the perimeter was laid out.

Then, the pieces of the new project arrived.

It was assembled, and then a retaining wall was built using pieces of the felled tree.

A little help came from their neighbor…

And finally, it all came together!

When the project was done, it was time to step back and admire it.

So we have only one question: when can we come over?

Florida Isn't The Only Place With Sinkholes -- New York City Is Getting Them, Too

I used to think sinkholes weren’t real. But when they started appearing in Florida and parts of South America, I thought they were just isolated incidents that were confined to these locations. Boy, was I wrong.

A terrifying sinkhole just appeared on my New York City block, and it’s only about a mile away from my home. Having just biked past this intersection the day before, I could have easily ended up being swallowed by this force of nature.

Check out the damage below, and see just how these random, destructive events can literally tear the ground out from under you.

I guess I’ll have to follow the detour now.

I wonder how long it’ll be until this is fixed.

I think I’m going to have to find a new bike route. To be honest, though, I don’t really feel like going outside anymore. This is just too much.
