When They Dropped Their Son Off At Daycare, It Was The Last Time They Saw Him Alive

Parents have one goal when it comes to sending their kids to daycare: to feel like the people they’ve trusted to care for their little ones are kind, competent, and caring.

But sometimes, proper daycare research can only do so much. If citations against facilities are kept out of public records, parents have no way of knowing the truth. This is something that one heartbroken family in Oklahoma learned the hard way.

When Derek and Ali Dodd — the wonderful parents of two young boys — dropped their youngest son off at daycare in April of this year, they had no idea that he would never come home.

One of the employees at the facility carelessly let little Shepard sleep in his carseat instead of putting him in a crib. She came to check on him two hours later, and when she touched his skin, he was ice cold. Although she called 911 immediately, the damage was already done. Sadly, the infant died from something called “positional asphyxiation.”

Essentially, the baby suffocated in his sleep because he wasn’t properly fastened into the seat.

At an early age, babies don’t have the strength to lift and support their own heads. If improperly fastened in a carseat, infants can become slumped over, which makes them unable to breathe. This act of laziness and disregard for Shepard’s safety on the part of the daycare employee is ultimately what took his life.

The most terrifying thing about the situation is that Shepard’s death doesn’t appear in public records.

Parents looking to keep their kids at this daycare center would then have no idea what happened. Fortunately, the facility has since shut down.

To help cope with their grief, Derek and Ali now work to raise awareness for positional asphyxiation so that parents and caretakers can avoid making this devastating mistake.

No parent should ever have to endure the loss of their child, especially at the hands of someone else’s carelessness. Here's A Throwback To Some Awkward Sex Education From The '60s

I still remember when I was told how sex works. The physical gymnastics seemed rather bizarre to me at the time, and I remember asking, “How did people figure that out?”

The early where-do-babies-come-from conversation is always a bit uncomfortable, and to aid bashful parents, many publishers produce books aimed at making the process a bit easier. But as an adult, you can’t look at some of them without cringing a little. Here’s one from the 1960s — complete with illustrations — that might bring you back to an uncomfortable memory from your childhood.

The book starts out with a nice metaphor about seeds and plants.

After that, it addresses animals. You know from their faces that those giraffes are about to get freaky.

And it really doesn’t censor itself much, although a child might be confused about what stacking chickens has to do with babies.

But it’s explained in full.

The text in the book is very straightforward without being too graphic. If you have to explain sex, this book actually does a pretty decent job. (All without using the word “cloaca.”)

It then teaches kiddos that their moms and dads were lying when they said that the dogs were “just playing.”

And finally, the book gets to the real topic: humans. These are humans.

Mom is super perky, so there’s that.

The actual mechanics are left for the kids to infer from the previous illustrations.

It’s somewhat lacking in the romance department, but you don’t even understand romance when you’re seven, so who cares?

After it discusses sex, the book talks about pregnancy and childbirth.

And it leaves out the gory aspects, of course.

You can tell by their hollow, soulless eyes that these kids just had “the talk.”

You can also check this book out on Awful Library Books (a site that we highly recommend for all kinds of cringe), and see some reactions from people who endured this literary gem as kids.

Having frank conversations with kids about sex is healthy, and can help them make informed, safe decisions later in life. It also spares them some of the confusion and shame that goes along with repressing it. (But you might want to skip the chicken diagrams.)

A Baby Surrounded By Syringes? Sounds Weird, But This Photo Has A Beautiful Story

A photo of a tiny baby surrounded by hundreds of syringes has started making the rounds online. That description makes the situation sound a bit scary, but you can rest assured that there’s nothing creepy going on here.

It’s actually a photo that honors the struggle that many women go through when they want to start a family.

This photo was submitted to Sher Institutes’ Facebook page by a client named Angela.

That’s because she went through hundreds of needles before she finally got pregnant. Now, she has a beautiful baby girl.

(via ABC)

Conceiving through in vitro fertilization (IVF) as Angela did can require hundreds of hormone injections. Angela underwent the IVF process multiple times over the course of a year, and she says that her doctors had to use a crazy amount of needles throughout the process.

It’s a tough and painful endeavor for women, both physically and emotionally.

When Sher Institutes shared her photo, more mothers came forward.

This sense of solidarity helped them share all of their painful, nerve-wracking, and triumphant stories. The women found solace in knowing that they weren’t alone in this fight.

They also shared photos of their beautiful children, all of whom were conceived with the help of IVF therapy.

Eventually, Angela’s IVF treatments worked, and she had a beautiful, healthy baby girl. She encourages other women who are going through this process to “hang in there.” Judging by these stories, all of that risk is worth the reward.

She Knew She Always Looked Different Than Her Siblings, The Reason Why Is Shocking

Every family has a “black sheep” who doesn’t quite fit in. For Kay Rene Reed Qualls and DeeAnn Angell Schafer, they both grew up with the nagging feeling they weren’t like the rest of their brothers and sisters. And that’s because they weren’t.

Both were born at the Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner, OR, on May 3, 1953. While their moms were still recovering from the heavy sedation used in birthing back then, a nurse took the infants to give them their baths. When the girls were returned, however, the mothers noticed something off…but they were brushed aside as still not having their faculties fully recovered.

As years went by, it became clear that Kay Rene and DeeAnn didn’t really look anything like their other siblings. Jokes about “the milkman” were made and any suspicions remained unanswered. Finally, after over 50 years, the truth was finally revealed:

Parenting Is Made Easier With These 18 Supremely Clever Tricks

No one ever said that being a parent was easy. It’s quite the opposite, in fact. And there’s so much conflicting information out there that looking for answers can be just as confusing as having no information at all. And don’t get me started on the well-meaning friends and relatives who insist that their way is the right way.

We can’t promise that they’ll solve all of your problems, but here are 18 clever tricks that might make parenting feel a little less daunting.

1. A laundry basket keeps toys — and kids — contained in the bath.

2. Attaching a hook to the back of the high chair will make mealtime so much easier.

It’s the perfect place to hang things like rags and bibs.

3. “Monster Spray” helps frightened children calm down before bed.

Simply place stickers on a spray bottle and let them take it to bed. Don’t fill it with anything. Just tell them that monster spray is a gas that humans can’t detect. They can spray their bedrooms with reckless abandon, and they’ll never make a mess.

4. Stretching a crib sheet over the play pen keeps insects from biting your baby.

It provides some nice shade, too.

5. Freeze a pacifier in milk or formula to soothe a teething baby.

Fill a small ice cube tray with milk or formula, insert pacifiers into each cup, and freeze. All you have to do after that is pop one out, hand it to your little one, and let them take care of the rest.

6. Soaking a washcloth in warm chamomile tea can help calm down babies who are feeling a little fussy.

Just let them chew on it a bit, and make sure the tea isn’t too hot!

7. Use a marker to make simple dosage tables on medicine bottles.

This will allow you to keep track of when you’ve given each dose. It’s especially helpful for sleep-deprived parents.

8. A sliced pool noodle keeps doors from slamming.

And the extra padding makes it difficult for kids to slam their fingers in the door.

9. Pool noodles are also great for keeping little kids safely in bed.

It’s also great for traveling with little ones who still aren’t used to sleeping in big-kid beds.

10. Keep kids from wasting toilet paper with the addition of a cute sign.

Using a road sign is a fun, friendly way to remind kids not to unravel the whole darn thing.

11. Make sidewalk chalk that fits inside old deodorant containers to avoid messes.

You can use this recipe.

12. Put a little bit of hot glue on the bottom of your kids’ slippers for some added traction.

13. Silicone cupcake liners prevent car cupholders from getting gross.

In fact, this trick is great for everyone.

14. Using BandAids can help keep tiny fingers out of electrical outlets.

Hotel rooms aren’t always safe, so sticking some BandAids over the outlets is a quick, easy way to keep your kids out of harm’s way.

15. Load small toys into a mesh bag and toss it in the washing machine.

It’s a great way to sanitize toys, because you never really know where they’ve been.

16. Use a lint roller to clean up craft spaces.

Glitter is a nightmare to clean up, but this trick makes it easier.

17. Attach an empty tissue box to a full one for easy disposal.

This will keep gross, germy tissues from piling up elsewhere.

18. For older kids, write laundry instructions on the washing machine with dry-erase markers.

Teach kids to do their own laundry with step-by-step instructions.

You’ll probably still have your fair share of issues, messes, and tears as a parent, but that’s okay. You’re doing better than you think.

When They Were Eating Dinner, This Family Got The Most Amazing Surprise

A son sat down on the couch to open a present one day while his parents looked on. The gift was from his wife, and even though he already knew what was inside, his parents definitely didn’t.

Mom didn’t know what to say at first, but when she and Dad put it together, cuteness ensued.

These Parents Met Their Baby For The First Time, And Their New Family Was Complete

Photographing a birth is a touching way for families to document their latest additions, and photographer Kristen Prosser is no stranger to that. When she agreed to photograph her friends, David and Sarah Olsen, and their new addition to the family, she knew it was going to be a bit different.

The Minnesota couple recently adopted a child, and to mark the moment, they brought Prosser into the hospital where their new baby, Tilly Pearl, was waiting. “I have always wanted to photograph the first meeting of an adopted baby,” Prosser said. “I got to be a part of this incredible moment with one of my best friends!”

The couple, along with Prosser, flew from Minnesota to pick Tilly up in Florida.

There was a lot of anxious waiting.

Finally, the moment arrived! The Olsens met their baby girl for the first time.

It was love at first sight.

Sarah and David Olsen have been married for ten years, and have two sons, Zakary, six, and Levi, three. They’d planned on having a third, but Levi was born with spina bifida, and the chances of their next child having the affliction were high. The Olsens, after months of consideration, decided to adopt. Soon enough, they were matched with Tilly.

Now their family is complete.

As for Prosser, she was thrilled to be able to witness such a touching moment for her friends. “It was one of the most special moments of my life,” she posted to Facebook. “I was so privileged to watch this all unfold. What a perfect example of unconditional and sacrificial love.”

You can see more of Prosser’s work on her website and Facebook page.

Adoption makes a huge difference in everyone’s life, and stories of adoption can be incredible:
