The Amazing Stuff

We all expect our science teachers to know everything there is to know about the experiments we conduct in class. But as it turns out, we might be expecting too much. While this science teacher was running through an experiment at home before presenting it to her students, she failed to remember what would happen if she added a ton of hydrogen peroxide to the mix.

The result is something explosively funny!

Like her husband said, she really must be a great teacher. We all make mistakes! Let’s just hope that this goes better when she brings it to the classroom.

We’ve heard about students speaking out against the dress code before and getting the support and attention that they deserve, which is amazing. But what happened to this girl is even more ridiculous than usual. When a student body president, junior marshall, and fellowship recipient gets busted for wearing a skirt she wore for a Teacher Cadet lesson — something that any normal person would deem totally professional — she took to social media.

On her Instagram, she very articulately expressed the problem with her school’s authority figures and leadership.

Meet Carey Burgess, a student at Beaufort High School in South Carolina.

“So maybe I am in the wrong…”

“Maybe our society isn’t yet advanced enough to handle three inches of my thigh. This is a patriarchal society, and I am a woman. I have to be kept in my place, or I may do something that is so rarely seen in Beaufort High School — learn. You saved me, Beaufort High. As Student Body President, junior marshal, and a recipient of the Palmetto Fellowship, I was heading down the path of hard drugs (good thing you’re testing next year!), strip clubs, and sugar daddies.

I don’t know where I would be without your misogynistic views. How could I go on without a certain teacher making sexist jokes all class? How could I survive without my science professor letting me know that I am an inferior woman? Yes, I am a woman. I am woman with thighs, a butt, and a brain. I am bigger than Beaufort High School. All of us are. Maybe instead of worrying about my skirt, Beaufort High should take notice of its incompetent employees, and sexist leaders.”

Carey has received so much support since posting this message.

After a conversation with her principal, she’s glad that she has been able to bring light to this very real, very important problem.

Hopefully, the whole ordeal will be a stepping stone on the path to getting rid of misogynistic teachers at this school and beyond.

Carey’s message is very clear, and she conveyed it with just the right combination of anger and poise. We can only hope that students like Carey continue to speak out against injustice. That’s the only way to inspire change.

High school freshman Hannah Combs was minding her own business outside of Harker Heights High School when something horrible happened. She had experienced some bullying in middle school, and she was looking forward to a fresh start in high school…but things were actually about to get much worse.

A boy came up behind her and poured super glue right onto her hair and scalp. If you didn’t know, super glue is nasty stuff, and Hannah says that her scalp immediately started burning.

She was sent to the nurse, but the pain didn’t stop. As a result, Hannah was rushed to urgent care.

She ended up getting serious chemical burns from the glue.

First-degree chemical burns, to be exact.

And the boy who did this to her? He just got some in-school suspension.

Because boys will be boys, right? Wrong. Needless to say, Hannah and her family were livid. Hannah’s father was furious with the school for not taking more severe action after the assault, because that’s what this was: assault.

Hannah’s family wants the school to expel the culprit. They feel that an in-school suspension is too light a punishment. “I’m not going to pull my daughter out and uproot her from her life because of what this kid did to her,” Hannah’s father, Christian, said. “That child that did this to her. Uproot his life. He gave up the opportunity to go to Harker Heights when he committed the act.”

Hannah also had to cut her hair, which was devastating for her. You can see the sorrow in this photo.

“I realized that I lost my favorite thing about me. I loved my hair,” Hannah said. “My hair was the only thing I liked about myself, honestly. I lost it for no reason.”

After the incident, Hannah’s mother, Jessica, started a Facebook page to rally support for her daughter, and to raise awareness about bullying. The support came pouring in. Today, Justice for Hannah has over 12,000 likes.

Upon hearing about Hannah’s plight via Facebook, a local stylist named Nikki cleaned up Hannah’s hair for free, giving her this cute undercut style.

She looks great! Hannah now wants to fight back against bullying.

“I want to make a difference,” Hannah says. “I would like people to stand up for themselves. No one deserves to be bullied. It’s not fair for anyone. I’m just a normal kid with strong beliefs.”

Drumlines at high school football games are always fan favorites. There’s just something about them that makes people pay attention. So when this group trotted onto the field, the fans were already excited.

But a few minutes into the performance, something strange started to happen. That’s when these fans were treated to something they’d never seen before.

Skill, talent, and creativity. These kids are superstars!

Bringing a cat into your home is always a wonderful thing. Unlike dogs, cats mostly take care of themselves (as long as you supply them with food, that is). They’re also incredibly loving creatures who can be just as loyal as their canine counterparts.

Bringing a cat into a school, however, is a different story. Cats aren’t usually allowed to traipse around on school property, but students and teachers at Leland High School in San Jose, California, were more than happy to welcome their furry visitor.

This is Bubba.

Amber Marienthal of San Jose brought Bubba into her home in 2009.

She quickly realized that the cat loved hanging around at the nearby school to get a little affection from the students.

The kids liked Bubba so much that they eventually made him an official student.

He even has his own school ID card!

He also snagged a coveted cover spot on the school’s newsletter.

He’s clearly a model.

Bubba loves keeping an eye on his human friends.

And he sometimes makes his way over to the middle school to see what’s going on!

This cute kitty really loves spending time with his peers.

And they enjoy being with him, too.

This cat has made history as America’s first feline student.

He’s focused and ready to take on that math test!

But all of that learning really tuckers him out.

Bubba goes home from school every day, just like the other students.

And mom is always there to greet him with hugs and snacks!

High school can be a tough time for kids, especially if cliques are involved. Sometimes, it can seem like everyone is out to get everyone else. And the worst part is that taking that mentality with you after high school can cause problems with relationships down the line. If only everyone could just relax and appreciate each other, right?

One mysterious Instagram account called The Benevolent One 3 aims to foster that sense of appreciation. Every day, students from East Valley High School in Spokane Valley, Washington, follow along as the account sends out individualized shout-outs to fellow students. Photos of students are accompanied by thoughtful, positive captions about that person with the goal of brightening his or her day.

Up until recently, no one knew who was behind it.

Every day, students are recognized for their kindness, cool clothes, senses of humor, and athletic abilities, and most captions tie in words of encouragement for the future. Students from the classes of 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 are all represented.

Not only does the account stand out for its kindness, but also for its unwavering efforts to include everyone, regardless of their grade or social circle. That can be hard to do in high school. The added encouragement at the end of each passage also shows compassion and understanding for the many insecurities and questions that teenagers face as they grow, learn, and change.

Eventually, the person behind the Instagram was revealed. During his graduation speech, Konner Suave, valedictorian of the class of 2015, admitted that he created the account. He noted that over the course of the year, students seemed to become more united. He hopes that his kindness was at least part of the reason for that. He also encouraged the younger classes to continue the legacy of kindness and compassion for one another, helping East Valley grow as a community.

Suave’s kindness and sense of inclusivity will get him far in life, and his touching words will hopefully resonate with fellow students as they move along their own paths. As he said, it’s very easy to be cruel and thoughtless on social media, so let’s take a cue from Konner and make an effort to be kinder.
