When You See These Photos, You'll Wish They Were From A Horror Movie

When you think of a vegetarian festival, you probably picture something pretty innocuous, right? If that’s the case, you’re going to be surprised by what goes on at Thailand’s Vegetarian Festival in Phuket every year.

Celebrated by ethnic Chinese Thai, the festival is most famous for images that are more than a little disturbing to those of us who are on the outside looking in.

At first glance, this festival looks pretty normal.

Locals parade through the streets wearing colorful garb, and people from all walks of life get involved in the festivities.

Nothing to see here, right?

But take a closer look at that photo. If it looks like that guy is walking around with a sword pierced through his cheeks, it’s because he is.

Throughout this annual celebration, men, women, and children parade through Phuket with knives, swords, guns, and other bizarre objects pierced through their cheeks.

They’re even known to walk over hot coals in the process.

While it may seem insane to us, this is actually a deeply spiritual act.

The gesture symbolizes the idea that participants absorb the community’s sins by inflicting these wounds upon themselves.

In order to participate in the festival, which dates back to the late 19th century, people must abstain from eating meat, having sex, and consuming alcohol for its ten-day duration.

This is a time of spiritual cleansing and renewal that is extremely important for Thai citizens of Chinese descent.

Every October, people flock to the region to experience this intriguing celebration for themselves.

Even though it may be hard for us to understand why people would go to such lengths for a festival like this, it’s important to honor and respect the traditions of other cultures. Customs and rituals like the ones carried out during Thailand’s Vegetarian Festival are what make the human race great. We’re all completely unique in our traditions and beliefs, and that’s a beautiful thing.

No One's Life Is Perfect, And One Photographer Is Blowing Instagram's Cover

Have you ever scrolled through those seemingly perfect photos on Instagram and said, “Why doesn’t my life look like that?” As pretty as those pictures are, it’s easy to feel discouraged when you’re surrounded by clutter in your everyday life.

But consider this your first lesson in photography — and its total lack of objectivity. That’s the idea behind this cheeky series by Thai photographer Chompoo Baritone, who recreates Instagram photos to reveal what’s really happening beyond the square.

Her reimagined photos include some real-life clutter.

She also includes some awkward bystanders in her shots, who seem to be wondering why on Earth someone would take a picture there.

Along with several other Instagram photographers, Baritone pokes fun at the way some people use Instagram and other social media platforms to make their lives seem much more beautiful than they really are.

The project is also a study in how we carefully edit our experiences to be palatable and attractive to others. Is it dishonesty? Is it vanity? Or is it just a way to regain a small amount of control over what life throws our way?

Baritone is currently studying photography at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. She’s relatively new to creating commentary through photography, but if these pieces are any indication of what’s to come, we’re excited to see where her vision goes from here!

This Young Elephant Has The Best Way Of Showing Affection To His Human Caretaker

Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand, has helped countless elephants find happy, loving lives outside of the area’s cruel tourism industry.

This sweet youngster named Faa Mai has never had to worry about the pain, fear, and helplessness other elephants endure when forced into the “crush training” method still used by so many heartless humans in order to make a buck. Instead, the lucky fella has grown up inside the facility where he’s only known kindness. One look at his happy face and you’ll know what an amazing difference that makes.

When he sees his favorite human, he can’t wait to give her snuggles and smooches:

He Was Just Hanging Out With This Elephant When Something Hilarious Happened

While spending a semester abroad in Bangkok, 22-year-old Christian LeBlanc and his girlfriend came across an elephant sanctuary during one of their expeditions. They decided to drop in and take a look. Wouldn’t you? They bought a basket of bananas and started feeding an elephant.

Hanging out with elephants is an exciting part of visiting Thailand.

Many places offer opportunities to feed and meet the elephants.

And if you think this is a great shot, just wait until you see what comes next.

The elephant was hungry, and he was eating so fast he didn’t realize that all the bananas were gone. And that’s when he grabbed Christian’s GoPro instead. “I didn’t even have time to think,” LeBlanc recalls. “It all happened so fast.”

As luck would have it, the GoPro was in time-lapse mode, meaning it recorded a series of photos without the button being pressed.

The result was this epic elephant selfie!

Or, as it’s apparently now known, an “elphie.”

The image instantly went viral once LeBlanc posted it to his Instagram, which he thinks is great. “I’m still in shock that it turned out that way. I’m in shock that this story has gone viral. It’s been a pretty crazy two days,” he told CBC News.

And naturally, some cheeky Photoshop was in order.

LeBlanc, who hails from Vancouver, graduated from UBC a few weeks ago and is now traveling through the Philippines. As for his (er, the elephant’s) famous picture, LeBlanc says he hopes that people will be inspired to travel, and will see how easy it is to make memories without a huge budget.

“I can’t guarantee an elephant selfie,” he says, “but it’s very easy to make it to this side of the world.” You can find more images of his travel adventures on Instagram.
