The Only Reason This Hiker Is Alive Is Because Of His Incredibly Heroic Dog

Getting struck by lightning is an incredibly rare event for any human to experience. Surviving such an encounter, though, is even more rare. A lightning strike could kill a person, but it could also result in scarring or disfigurement.

When this man was hiking, lightning struck him…and the reason he survived is heartbreaking.

While Jonathan Hardman was out on a hike with a few friends up Mount Bierstadt in Colorado, a sudden thunderstorm developed.

The hikers were making their way back down the mountain when disaster struck. Hardman was helping his dog Rambo over an obstacle when they were both struck by lightning.

Hardman blacked out and doesn’t remember anything after that moment. At one point, he woke up and realized he didn’t have feeling in his arms or legs.

He was rushed to the hospital for emergency care. There, doctors informed him that his dog was the reason he was alive. When the lightning struck, it hit both Hardman and Rambo. Rambo absorbed most of the shock and died instantaneously…but saved the life of his owner.

Without Rambo there to absorb the brunt of the strike, Hardman definitely would had died, but now he can live on knowing that his dog made the ultimate sacrifice for him.

This is the last photo Hardman took with his canine best friend, Rambo.

Even though Hardman can’t bring his beloved dog back, he’s so thankful for the gift Rambo gave him. He can live on and remember the angel that saved his life.

Though his dog’s sacrifice saved his life, Hardman wishes there was a way to bring his lifelong buddy back. Hopefully, one day these two best friends will be reunited.
