Schwarzenegger was almost denied his role as the Terminator--he was slated to be the hero

"I'll be back."

It's an iconic line that you can't help but hear in Arnold Schwarzenegger's voice from his most infamous role as the Terminator. Things could have been a lot different, though, if director James Cameron had his way. You'd still see Schwarzenegger of screen, but he wouldn't have been the bad guy.

Cameron originally wanted to cast the future governor of California as Kyle Reese, the film's hero that traveled back in time to protect Sarah Connor and prevent the machine apocalypse. After reading through the script, Schwarzenegger requested the part of the evil, goal-driven murder machine. Cameron denied him at first, claiming that Reese was the action star and the Terminator barely had any lines. Schwarzenegger replied with "trust me" and the rest was history.

"The Terminator" was released in 1984 and made over $38.4 million at the box office (it cost about $6.4 million to make). It made $4 million in the United States during its opening weekend and is now hailed as a classic action movie, and the one that put Schwarzenegger on the map.
