Minnesota has a lot of lakes. It's not called the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" for nothing. In fact, Minnesota has 11,842 lakes that are over 10 acres in size, with the 20 million acre (31,700 square mile) Lake Superior being the largest.
Beyond that it becomes a little vague as to how many more lakes there are. The definition of a lake is subject to debate once you go under 10 acres, with a small body of water at some point becoming a pond.
But, just sticking to the 11,842 lakes, one can calculate the amount of shoreline that these bodies of water provide for Minnesota. The figure is around 90,000 miles and is more shoreline than California, Florida and Hawaii combined.
Not bad for a state that is nowhere near the ocean.
