Our Moon is slowly getting further away from Earth, but don't panic, it's only doing it at a rate of 3.7cm per year. While it's going to take some time for the moon to escape the gravitational claws of the Earth, when it does, life on our green planet may be a little shaky for a while. The moon is after all responsible for the tides, which have all sorts of positive spin-offs for us humans.

Mars, which also has a moon, is not quite so lucky. The Mars moon is getting closer to the red planet and will eventually crash into the surface. This could have a far more negative side effect to anyone who may be living there at the time.

But, again, as with many things to do with planets and the solar system, it's going to take a while. Over 10 million years in fact. So while we might have colonised Mars by that time—or ceased to exist altogether—it's likely we will have technology to address the issue of the falling moon.

So researchers actually believe the moon will not crash into the surface of Mars at all, but as it nears the planet it will be torn apart by the increasing gravitational pull. This will ultimately result in floating debris around Mars forming a Saturn-like ring.

That should provide a fairly spectacular sunset as you gaze out from your Martian penthouse window!
