If you find the "special" Tootsie Pop wrapper with an Indian and try to redeem it, you will be disappointed.

Tootsie Roll Industries launched their chewy centered Tootsie Pop in 1931 and shortly thereafter the rumour started that if you found a tootsie pop wrapper bearing an Indian shooting a star with his bow and arrow, you could redeem it for a bag of candy.

Nobody is quite sure how this rumour started, but it was never introduced or sanctioned by the Tootsie Roll company. The rumour has persisted until this day, with the company processing around 150 letters from hopeful customers every week.

The company used to simply reply with a let down letter, but in 1982 they decided to create the "Legend of the Indian Wrapper," a story that was included with the return letters.

The idea behind the story was that executives felt it would be better to give children a story to read rather than just a let down letter as this would help to sooth the disappointment.
