Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Tommi's teenage injury later defined the sound of heavy metal guitar!

At the age of just 17, Tony Iommi lost the tips of his middle and ring finger in an industrial factory accident. At the time Iommi had been playing the guitar for a little over three years and figured the injury would be the end of his playing days.

However, his factory foreman insisted on playing him a recording of jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. While Iommi was impressed with the abilities of Reinhardt, he was inspired when he learned that Reinhardt had only two fingers with which to play his fret board.

Ionni returned to his guitar and later went on to form Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward.

Ionni's injury meant he needed to place custom made thimbles over the tips of his damaged fingers. This made it difficult for him to feel and bend the strings. To combat this issue, Ionni would de-tune his guitar to make the strings easier to bend.

This "heavier" sound initiated by Black Sabbath became the trademark sound of the 70's and 80's heavy metal bands.
