What's the world's largest crop? If you guessed sugar, you were right!

With how we villainize sugar these days, you may be surprised to find out that it is actually the world's largest crop.
Not individual size wise, but prevalence wise. In 2010, sugar cane was grown on about 23.8 million hectares in about 90 countries and about 1.69 billion tons were produced. Dentists everywhere just shuddered.
Sugar cane is grown in tropical and subtropical regions. The leading producer is Brazil followed by India, China, Thailand, Pakistan and Mexico.
Of course sugarcane is not only used to make sugar for our cookies and cakes and candy, it can also be used to make ethanol. For example, in Brazil, ethanol is produced on a large scale from the country's sugar cane.
