What would it have been like for J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings to write a book with an element of time travel?
The world will never know. Instead, the world is stuck with a small collection of chapters of Tolkien's unfinished book 'The Lost Road' which would have involved Time Travel, and linked the legends of Middle Earth to medieval Europe, and then to modern times.
The idea for The Lost Road first came to be when Tolkien and C.S. Lewis decided that one of them should write about Space Travel, and the other should write about Time Travel.
C.S. Lewis came up with a well known science fiction novel, 'Out of the Silent Planet' whereas Tolkien couldn't make his novel work saying that it "ran dry" after a few chapters!
