If you are ever in San Diego during Comic-Con you might want to keep your eyes peeled for these adorable crochet superheroes hiding out around town. Geeky Hooker started teaching herself how to crochet five years ago while living in Houston, Texas. At first she was only able to make lumpy little dolls, which soon turned into lumpy little superheroes.
Her love for crocheting ballooned from here, turning into an all out obsession. She writes on Bored Panda, “It got to a point where if it was geeky and fun, I’d try to make it out of yarn. Captain America? Done! Chewbacca? Got it. Frida Kahlo, for no reason other than the fact that I REALLY wanted an excuse to put a tiny little unibrow on her? Done and done.”
As you can imagine within a five-year span she amassed quite a collection of sci-fi monsters, cute little critters, comic book characters and more, such as those that fall under the “I just freaking felt like making it” category.
While she keeps some she gives most of them away. She also has an annual tradition where she distributes her crochet superheroes all around San Diego during Comic-Con, granting all of the comic-loving super fans a chance to discover these hidden gems.
“I tag them with my contact info, and then I cross my fingers and hope that they’ll be given good homes. So far I’ve had a good turnout of adoptions, and hopefully they’ll eventually take over the world, one goofy little sack of yarn at a time!”
This year’s recent Comic-Con was the biggest success yet, making Geeky Hooker one happy camper. On her website she writes, “Healthcare professional by day, crochet ninja by night. At the risk of developing carpal tunnel, I make lil’ critters out of yarn in my free time.”
