Some bridges are just not a way to get from point A to point B, in fact, they may even be a destination in itself, like these spectacular bridges. The Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, pictured above, is a famous rope bridge near Ballintoy in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It links the mainland to the tiny island of Carrickarede.

Hangzhou Bay Bridge, China

The Hangzhou Bay Bridge spans across the Hangzhou Bay on the East China Sea and crosses the Qiantang River at the Yangtze River Delta. At 22 miles in length, it was among the ten longest trans-oceanic bridges when it opened in 2007.

The Royal Gorge Bridge is America’s highest suspension bridge and a legendary feat of engineering renowned the world over. It hangs 956 feet above the Arkansas River.

Aizhai Bridge, China

The Aizhai Bridge is the world’s highest and longest tunnel-to-tunnel bridge. It connects southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality to Changsha in Hunan, some 1,100 feet above the Dehang Canyon, and opened to traffic in March 2012.

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

Of course, there may be no bridge more iconic than San Francisco’s Golden Gate. Now 78 years old, it’s arguably the most recognizable bridge in the world. The 4,200-foot art deco suspension bridge open to car, bike & foot traffic is one that should be on everyone’s must-cross list.
