When it comes to putting in a new floor, you have a ton of options. However, for every style of floor you can decide on, you’re going to have to spend the money to have it professionally installed. That is, unless you’re Sunny Pettis Lutz and her pal Tony, who created a cheap and unique floor for her home using locally sourced materials without spending a lot of money.
The first step in creating Lutz’s version of a wooden floor was to gather the wood. Sunny lives in Arizona, so her flooring is mainly made up of shaggy bark juniper and alligator bark pine. Only dead trees were harvested for this project, and no living trees were removed. All wood removal for this project was in compliance with the Forest Service.
The cordwood was run through a chop saw to create one-inch disks, and each disk was sanded down until smooth. Sunny and Tony then began laying them out on the floor.
Getting the disks as close to one another as possible, they glued the pieces directly to the concrete floor.
It took a while, but the floor was eventually completely covered!
The wood was given a thin coat of polyurethane before the grout was applied.
The grout was applied, and then two more coats of polyurethane.

Sunny’s home now has a warm and unique floor that catches the eye of anyone that comes in! The best part is that the project was realized using sustainable and local materials, so Sunny’s flooring is pretty eco-friendly, too.
