After the fall of Berlin, most remaining Nazi soldiers surrendered, accepting their loss in the face of Adolf Hitler's death.
However, the U-530, a well-worn German submarine, refused to surrender.
In direct opposition to orders of naval Admiral Karl Dnitz, U-530 did not surrender. Instead, the boat disappeared for nearly two months.
During this time, nobody knows exactly what happened. Though some believe the boat offloaded a Nazi officer, perhaps Hitler or Eva Braun in disguise, these claims have never been proven.
After reappearing, captain Oberleutnant Otto Wermuth surrendered to the Argentine Navy at Mar del Plata. The ship had lost its deck gun and ship log, and the crew had no identification.
During WWII, Germany commissioned 1156 U-boats. These ships often traveled in along the East Coast of North America, looking for merchant and military ships to sink. Though many of these boats were sunk, most have not yet been found.
