During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the kibbutz was attacked by the Egyptian army, but was retained by Israel. it was originally known as Mashabim, but was renamed Mashabei Sadeh in honor of Palmach leader Yitzhak Sadeh who died in 1952.
One super interesting thing about this place is the fact that they breed shrimp right in the middle of the desert!
They do this through a process called aquaculture, meaning they cultivate the populations under very controlled conditions. It is essentially farming for the sea, as opposed to hunting and gathering (fishing).
They also breed the Australian fish Barramundi, the only kibbutz to do so.
Other than that, the kibbutz’s economy consists of normal agriculture such as field crops, poultry and dairy.
It also operates a factory that produces brass ball-valves and fittings, and runs a guesthouse.
