Any high profile politician worries about assassination attempts. They happen, but are fairly rare. That is, unless you're King Zog I of Albania. He survived an alleged 55 attempts on his life.

That can happen when you live in a country where there's a custom of blood vengeance. Zog broke off an engagement after being crowned, meaning that family had the right to kill him. Because of this, he kept bodyguards around him at all times. There's nothing that suggests any of the assassination attempts were from this family, though.

One attempt that definitely did happen was when he was leaving an Opera in Vienna and two men came to carry out an assassination plot. They mistook his guard for Zog and shot him three times in the head. The Albanian Prime Minister was also wounded in the attack.

There are conflicting stories, but it's said that Zog actually took out his own pistol and fired back! He didn't hit anyone, but he's known to be the only modern leader to ever do so. Most are presumably trying too hard not to get shot.

He also survived another attempt where he was shot twice in the chest. He forgave the assassin who said he acted alone. After meeting with the man, the leader of an opposition group that the man was a part of was killed. This means he probably changed his story to say he was ordered to kill Zog, as many suspected. No one disputes that Zog was behind the death of the opposition leader.

This is one king you wouldn't want to mess with. Some did, though, and he was exiled in 1939. He ruled Albania from 1925 to 1939, first as president from 1925-28, and then as king from 1928-39.
