The majority of people from Utah belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its teachings are very much against the consumption of alcohol.
Because of the large population of Mormons in Utah and this prevailing traditional Mormon belief, the alcohol laws in Utah have always been rather strict.
Restaurants in Utah have to separate bartenders preparing drinks from the customers who ordered them. This partitioning is referred to as the Zion curtain and is often made of frosted glass.
The idea behind these Zion curtains is to keep alcohol out of sight of those restaurant patrons who have made a conscious choice not to consume alcohol. It is also hoped that it will combat excessive drinking by the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ theory.
In the state of Utah a person must be 21 years old to buy or consume alcohol. There is a limited time during a day in which alcohol can be served and it may not, under any circumstances, be served after 1 a.m.
According to a survey conducted in 2005, the majority of the population in Utah are in favor of the current alcohol laws and the majority also supports the current 3.2 percent alcohol limit.
It must be added that the survey was conducted by a LDS sponsored media outlet.
