Some people get nervous before crossing a bridge with the possibility of collapse always being a possible, if unlikely, outcome. Yet most people would never suspect the bridge they cross every day to be fully rigged with dynamite ready to explode, but this is exactly what happened in Holloshaza, Hungary!
Hungary saw intense fighting in World War II as the invading Soviet Army slowly fought its way into Budapest. The small village of Holloshaza was a crossroads that blocked the way and saw extreme violence. So much so, that German defenders of the town rigged the bridge with dynamite if they needed to close the town off from the invading army’s approach. Tactics such as this were common in the war, however no other cases have been seen matching this mishap.
After the war ended, inhabitants of the town were so rattled that they must have forgot that the retreating German army had planned to blow up the bridge as soon as they left but didn’t. 55 years went by, with traffic crossing it everyday, before someone noticed some strange wires.
The town investigated and found that the dynamite and wiring was still there and functional! Fortunately for Holloshaza the bombs were removed, because they could have exploded at any time!
