From 2006-2011, Honda supplied engines to every IndyCar Series competitor. A total of 98 drivers raced with the Honda Indy V-8 during that period, with 15 drivers recording race victories. As of 2012, Honda engines have logged nearly 500,000 race miles and approximately 1.2 million miles of practice, qualifying and racing miles combined in the series.
The six years that Honda served as an IndyCar engine supplier were the only six times in Indy 500 history there were no engine failures recorded.
Wondering we haven't heard this statistic in a commercial yet? It could be because these aren't your every day engines. They are specifically designed for the IndyCar vehicles and aren't available to the every day customer. Still, it's an impressive feat that no one else has accomplished, and shows off their knowledge of engine building.
The 2012 season marked the return of manufacturer competition to the IZOD IndyCar Series after six years of Honda serving as single engine supplier. Chevrolet and Lotus now join Honda in providing engines to the 33-car Indianapolis 500 starting field.
