The wombat is a marsupial animal indigenous to Australia. Their closest living relative is the koala and, although they are really cute, this isn't the coolest thing about them.
When wombats go to the bathroom, their poop comes out square! They have special bones and muscles in their back that help shape their feces into little cubes. It makes no sense that their poop would be square unless there was a reason that impacted their survival, and there is!
Wombats naturally have very poor eyesight, which causes a big problem because they only come out during twilight to feed. Wombats live in underground burrows and, because of their poor eyesight, they have trouble returning home once that have eaten. Before they go out, they place their square feces on a nearby rock so that they are able to know which burrow is theirs.
Each wombat's feces has a different, particular scent. When they are ready to return home, they follow the scent. But why does it have to be square? Well, most feces is round and if you placed it on a rock, it would roll off and the wombats would be lost. Cube-shaped feces will lay gently and won't move.
