Guerilla artist Banksy strikes again! At the moment he's not switching out doctored paintings for classic ones in famous art museums. Not to be one note, he's changed his tune by dabbling with the music scene—the socialite music scene.
When Paris Hilton released her CD in August of 2006, it entered the UK chart at number 29. That same week, Banksy had a plan of his own—part prank, part social commentary, completely Banksy. In 48 music shops across the UK, he replaced 500 of Hilton's CD with his own remixes of her songs and re-titled them with philosophical queries such as 'Why Am I Famous?' and 'What Have I Done?' and 'What am I For?'He also replaced the cover art to depict the heiress topless and with a dog's head.
Perhaps most interesting? Not one customer complained or returned a doctored version of the CD. "It's not the type of behaviour you'd want to see happening very often," a spokesman said. "I guess you can give an individual such as Banksy a little bit of leeway for his own particular brand of artistic engagement... Often people might have a view on something but feel they can't always express it, but it's down to the likes of Banksy to say often what people think about things... It might be that there will be some people who agree with his views on the Paris Hilton album."
