Can you imagine Nicolas Cage playing the role of Superman? Well, he very nearly did! After various failed attempts to get a new Superman movie off the ground, Warner Bros had a plan to release 'Superman Lives.'
Jon Peters, who produced 'Batman" in 1989, did not want Superman to wear his red and blue suit. He also did not want him to be able to fly because he thought that was all just too silly!
Tim Burton was brought in to direct, and Nicolas Cage was picked to play Superman. The movie was due for release in 1998.
Cage signed a contract to play Superman and to get paid $20 million, whether or not the film was ever made! Clever move.
Costs started spiraling, and the start of filming was pushed back. Although Dan Gilroy reduced costs by re-writing the script, the movie was put on hold, and Burton left to film 'Sleepy Hollow.'
Warner Bros were unable to find a replacement for Burton. When the movie was still not made by 2000, Nicolas Cage walked away from the project—with his $20 million!
Maybe it's a good thing the movie never happened. Really, what would Superman be if he's not allowed to fly? And what would he wear, if not his trademark red and blue suit?
