He started the mapping process in 1963 and the map now consists of over 2400 individual sheets of paper. Jerry began by creating a city, and soon, countries with their high-speed monorail lines and freeways appeared.
His morning ritual begins with adding notes and sample chips to a massive color journal. Next, the fate of Jerry’s world is decided with the draw of a card from the bottom of a deck of playing cards which he remodeled. The card, not Jerry’s mood, dictates how many panels he moves in the rotation, which panel will be worked on next and whether or not a whole country is destroyed and new worlds created from the ruins!
Jerry’s sister-in-law, Lynn Staley often wonders: “Will this place, whatever it is, survive or be consumed by the void? What about it's inhabitants? And what can we learn from it about our own fate? Is there someone somewhere with another deck of cards like Jerry's?"
