Air Force One goes to serious lengths to protect the president--check out this insane story from a flight to Syria!

It is a well-known fact that the President of the United States is protected at all possible costs. An untimely death of the president could prove a disaster for the country he leads. As a result, no chances are taken when it comes to the president's safety.

Take one harrowing instance involving Richard Nixon, for example. Back in June of 1974, Nixon was on a flight to the Middle Eastern nation of Syria for a scheduled visit. The president, as usual, was aboard Air Force One, which is specifically designed to safely and reliably transport the president.

Then things started to get a little scary. Suddenly, Syrian jet fighters intercepted Air Force One to escort the plane to it's destination. Typically, fighter aircraft do not act as escorts to Air Force One, although it has happened on rare occasions in American airspace.

But the crew had not been expecting it that day. So, for the sake of playing it safe, they assumed the worst and tried to evade them, even going so far as taking a dive!

It seems some communication could have cleared up this misunderstanding, but one thing is for sure: the crew on Air Force One really are dedicated to protecting the president!
