The attacks of September 11, 2001 caused a great outpouring of sympathy for the United States. Some of it was very public and was give a lot of coverage. Other gestures are not so well known, such as the actions of the personnel aboard a German destroyer.
An American man stationed on the USS Winston S. Churchill shared a touching memory in an email with his father about the aftermath of 9/11. In Plymouth, England, the people aboard the Lutjens, a German ship, got together with the Americans there.
When it was time to move on, the Germans requested that the U.S. Ship pass close by so they could say farewell. So everyone came to stand on deck while departing.
As the USS Winston S. Churchill approached, they noticed the American flag was being flown on the other ship--at half mast. Then, with the blowing of two whistles, the German crew, dressed in their blue uniforms, began manning the rails. There was also a sign being displayed the read, “We stand by you.”
It was reportedly a very emotional moment. There was sadness in the air after the attacks, but also comfort in seeing the support of not only fellow Americans but of people from all around the world.
