It is widely accepted that all the dog breeds available today are originally descendant from wolves. While it may seem a little hard to accept this when faced with a Chihuahua or Teacup Yorkshire Terrier, it's not as hard to imagine when considering an Alsatian, for instance.
Of the 178 breeds recognised by the American Kennel Club, 85 are classified as "ancient," those considered to have less genetic variations from the original wolves.
One of these truly ancient breeds is the Siberian Husky. Thought to be descendant from the original Eskimo sled dogs, themselves basically domesticated wolves, the Siberian Huskies were responsible in many cases for keeping tribes and settlements alive through their ability to haul heavy loads over long distances through exceedingly harsh conditions.
Siberian Huskies today are largely bred as pets, featuring an above average intelligence and a great affinity for children. Being originally pack animals, the Husky will be rather cooperative than obedient and prefers continuous companionship, a fact that has their owners considering them more as companions, than pets.
