No one can deny that Elvis Presley changed the face of rock and roll for ever, but it was not all plain sailing for "The King". Presley, born in 1935 to poor parents, originally gained his musical inspiration from the Assembly of God church that he attended as a child.
At school Presley achieved a somewhat average C for music being told by his teacher that he had no aptitude for singing. He promptly brought his guitar to school the following day to prove her wrong. The two eventually agreed that the teacher did not appreciate his type of singing.
After school Presley was dealt further blows after being rejected by two bands he auditioned for, both claiming he could not sing.
Presley finally got his break in July 1954 with the recording of "That's All Right" and the rest, as they say, is history.
But, Presley only took on his signature gold jackets and jewelled white jumpsuits after advice given to him by fellow performer, Liberace. Liberace is rumoured to have advised The King to start wearing more outlandish clothing after attending one of his performances.
Presley took the advice and created his trademark look that made his performances so unique.
