As the name implies, the sand cat can be found in the sandy regions of Northern Africa, Central Asia and Pakistan. The sand cat's body is well adapted to cope with the extremes of the desert. Its thick fur protects it from the cold at night, and the thick padding on the bottom of its feet protects it from the hot ground.
Another form of adaption the sand cat has evolved is the ability to survive without water. While most animals drink their water, the sand cat is able to get all the moisture it needs by eating live prey.
Given the remoteness of their habitat, and their nocturnal nature, exact numbers of the sand cat remain unknown. It's quite possible there are many more than estimated, and scientists continue find new sub-species related to it.
