Albert Hofmann, best known for synthesized LSD and isolating the psychedelic compounds of mushrooms, discovered the effects of LSD when he accidentally absorbed it through his fingertips! He wasn't wearing gloves when he handled it and, well, he got high.
He said the effect lasted only about 2 hours, but put him in a dizzy (but not so bad), intoxicated state with kaleidoscopic display of colors. And that was just an accidental small dose.
His original intent for LSD was to create a respiratory and circulatory stimulant without effects on the uterus. After accidentally ingesting it, he then took an intentional dose on April 19, 1943, and the first ever acid trip occurred.
He was very fond of the drug he created, believing it to have therapeutic properties both physically and mentally. He called it "medicine for the soul", and was very against it's world-wide ban. He conceded it could be dangerous if misused but supported it as a medical aid. He died of a heart attack at the ripe old age of 102.
