Let's hear it for the red, white, and blue! First on the moon, ever immortalized by the flags we left there bearing our stars and stripes. Except, every American flag on the moon is completely white.
There's a total of six American flags that have been planted by former lunar missions, and all but the original are proudly still erect. A feat that nobody expected, since they were made with simple materials that aren't made to withstand the harsh space setting. The only reason Armstrong and Aldrin's flag fell is because it was placed too close to the lander and was blown away when they blasted off.
The flags have turned white due to the lack of atmospheric protection, enduring blistering 100-degree Celsius sunlight and freezing -150-degree Celsius darkness. The unfiltered ultraviolet waves did a number on the material, bleaching the cloth.
The flags were made by a Annin, a flag manufacturing company in New Jersey. They were made from nylon and totaled a measly $5.50 (or about $37 in 2014 dollars). Not a bad price for something that was to represent mankind's greatest accomplishment.
If the aliens do come, it seems we've already got the truce flag flying. Hopefully they take understand white flags as a sign of peace.
