Linda Chamberlain spent three years in prison for the murder of her daughter, but a chance discovery set her free

This sad story made world headlines in the early 1980's when Australian couple, Lindy and Michael Chamberlain, lost their 9 week old daughter, Azaria, to a scavenging Dingo during a camping trip at Ayers Rock.

What made the story exceptionally sad was the outcome. The Chamberlain's claim was later rejected and Lindy was arrested and tried for the murder of her daughter. During a highly publicised trial that was later found to be fraught with inconsistencies, Lindy was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. Her husband was found complicit and given an 18 month suspended sentence.

Lindy spent three years in prison before a second tragic incident secured her freedom. English tourist, David Brett, was climbing Ayers Rock when he lost his footing and fell to his death. It took rescuers eight days to find his remains, which were eventually discovered close to a number of Dingo lairs. While rescuers were searching the area for missing parts of Brett, they discovered a crucial piece of Azaria's clothing. The jacket found had been central to Lindy's defence and it was long held that she had destroyed it after murdering her daughter.

This missing bit of evidence was enough to convince Australian authorities of Lindy's innocence and she was immediately set free.
