Las Vegas isn't the world's biggest gambling destination—not by a long shot

Those desperate souls looking to take out their life savings and bet it all on black probably have Las Vegas, the true city that never sleeps, on the mind. While that's fine for people in the United States, the true gambling destination is China's semi-autonomous administrative region, Macau.

Gambling turnover in Macau is now five times larger than Las Vegas, according to The New Yorker. It took over the gambling destination back in 2006. Every year, about $600 billion in bets are placed every year, which equates to roughly the same amount taken out of American cash machines each year. Macau patrons aren't really fans of the blinking lights and loud sounds of slot machines, most of the revenue comes from the tables.

The largest Macau casino is actually a larger replica of the Venetian casino in Las Vegas. In fact, the Sands' owner, Sheldon Adelson, has plans to build a replica of the Las Vegas strip on a pier that spans between two island. Now you can kill two birds with one stone on by visiting Macau on your next gambling vacation.
