St. Nicholas is reputed to have performed miracles, but it was a few acts of kindness that turned him into an endearing legend.
As the story goes, St. Nicholas anonymously donated dowry money to the daughters of a formerly wealthy man so they didn't have to become prostitutes. Not wanting to be thanked by the father, he dropped the gifted money down the family's chimney.
