It's illegal to detonate a nuke within the city limits of Chico, CA. But what do they think this law will accomplish?

City bylaws are notorious for being peppered with strange and seemingly nonsensical prohibitions. None more so than those for the small north Californian town of Chico. The town, with a population of just over 100,000 inhabitants, has the usual smattering of interesting laws, such as having to keep your horse off the sidewalk and not being allowed to display a going out of business sign unless you are actually going out of business.

But amongst the interesting list of laws is one that forbids the "testing, maintenance and storage" of nuclear weapons within the city limits. You can land yourself a fairly hefty fine if you are caught breaking this particular law as well. The obvious question that arises is, who exactly is going to serve you with the fine once you have obliterated tens of square miles of Californian countryside and rendered the land unusable for close on 100 years.

However, while this law may appear a little obtuse, the sentiment is actually quite real, and noble. Chico is effectively declaring their city area a nuclear free zone, stating in the law that the act of nuclear war threatens the very existence of its citizens and, as such, is totally unacceptable. So not all that crazy after all.
