Daniel Lambert was a surprisingly fit and strong man—considering he weighed 700 lb (318 kg)! By his own account, he did not over indulge in food and never drank much alcohol, but his weight inexplicably baloon steadily from when he was 21 until his death.

He was constantly concerned about his level of fitness; he exercised regularly whenever he had spare time and built up his strength. He was eventually able to comfortably carry 560 lb (250 kg) and could walk further without tiring than average-sized men.

He once went on an outing with his dog to see a dancing bear act in Blue Boar Lane, Leicester. Unfortunately his dog slipped from its leash and bit the bear. The muzzled bear knocked the dog to the ground, and when Lambert asked the keeper to restrain the bear, he removed the muzzle instead!

Daniel stepped in, hit the bear with a pole and punched it in the head with his left hand. The bear dropped to the ground and the dog managed to escape with its life.

Lambert passed away unexpectedly on 21 June 1809. His coffin was built on wheels so that it could easily be moved, but it still took 20 men almost half an hour to put the coffin into the grave!
