In November 2013, Spain’s justice minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon announced a plan to give reparations for the hundreds of thousands of Jewish individuals that were banished from the country during the Spanish Inquisition in the 15th century.

The estimated amount of Jews that were banished from the country during the Inquisition — known as Sephardic Jews — is around 300,000. Now, there are expected to be about 40,000 Jews that can trace their heritage back to 15th century Spain.

If you’re one of those whose ancestors were banished from the nation, you may qualify for Spanish citizenship. Ruiz-Gallardon promised that the process of obtaining a Spanish passport and citizenship would be made easier for anyone who could prove their heritage.
