The Spartans had an interesting way of life, and very original one at that. Lycurgas was the founding father of the lifestyle that you see in the 300 movie, where every Spartan is a trained warrior, babies are thrown into a chasm if defects are found and each person is an equal member of society.

There were several unique things the Spartans did. One was paying particular attention to their hair. Lycurgus stated, "long hair adds beauty to a good face and terror to an ugly one", and so they made sure their hair was always long.

The Spartans were feared warriors, but were diplomatic in resolving battles when it was possible. Often, battles were solved simply by one Spartan commander, to which others would listen and submit to. Lycurgus did not intend Sparta to use their armies for invasion but they were fierce warriors when provoked. The rest of Greece considered them wise and noble, leaders of justice.

After Lycurgus set up Sparta in this manner, he told them he'd be right back, and then left, never to return, yet Sparta obeyed his rules for 500 years after!
