Amato suffered serious brain injuries and was taken to the hospital to be treated for a concussion. The man claimed that, in the days following the accident his "mind was racing." This was due to a rewiring of neurons in his brain.
When Amato went to a friend's house with a piano, he sat down and immediately began to play. Even though he had never played the piano before, he was able to create complex music simply because of the way his brain was impacted by the incident.
Amato's condition is known as musical savant syndrome, a mental disorder in which a person's brain rewiring gives them above average prodigious abilities. The syndrome is extremely rare, and Amato is one of the few individuals with the ability on record.
