When Castro took power in Cuba, he destroyed every copy of Monopoly!

There are few board games as famous as Monopoly. The game has been played for over 100 years now and has permeated popular culture like few other phenomena have.

You might imagine, however, how a game that glorifies capitalism would rub a communist regime the wrong way.

Monopoly was pretty popular in Cuba in the years leading up to the revolution that put Fidel Castro in power. Seeing it as the pure embodiment of capitalist accumulation, he banned it and ordered that every set in the island be destroyed.
