There used to be a tiny, herbivorous, armor plated crocodile!

The simosuchus, which translates to "pug-nosed crocodile" is an extinct animal that used to exist in Madagascar, is named for it's unusually short skull.

Fully grown, this animal was less than 2.5ft in length! Furthermore, the simosuchus had maple leaf shaped teeth suggests that unlike many of it's relatives - the simosuchus was a herbivore!

Like so many other crocodyliforms, the simosuchus was covered in bony plates known as osteoderms. These plates covered the back, underside, and tail, to act as a shield from the dangers of the world around it.

However, the simosuchus is equipped with osteoderms that cover it's limbs as well for added protection!

The first specimen was found in 2000, included a complete skull and lower jaw, as well as small fragments of the rest of it's skeleton.

For all of the Canadians reading this, a skeleton of the simosuchus can be found at the Royal Ontario Museum!
