Galileo sold his telescope to Venice because he needed money to support his illegitimate children!

Galileo Galilei had been working at the University of Padua teaching geometry, astronomy, as well as theories of motion for quite some time.

He was just your average professor, except he needed to generate more income to help support several illegitimate children.

The business venture that Galileo decided to pursue would change his life, as well as what scientists were able to learn about the world and Universe.

Galileo decided to modify Dutch spyglasses by adding addition lenses in the device to increase the magnification of the images by 8 times!

Essentially, Galileo made objects appear 8 times bigger than the Dutch model that he copied, and then modified slightly.

Soon after Galileo sold the device to the City of Venice, he began to observe the heavens and take notes as to what he was seeing. These notes would later become the evidence Galileo used to prove that the Earth rotated around the Sun!
