Australia had a government shutdown in 1975. The Queen just fired everyone in Parliament!

In 1975, the Australian parliament had a deadlock similar to the one Democrats and Republicans are facing right now. They were not able to pass a bill to fund the government in time and the Australian government shut down.

However, that country is still ruled by the Queen of England, and she used her power to fire the prime minister. Her official representative named a temporary minister, who immediately passed a spending bill to fund the government.

The temporary Prime Minister dismissed the rest of Parliament and they held elections to restart from scratch. There hasn't been another shutdown since.
