Sao Paolo, Brazil, passed a law known as 'Cidade Limpa' (or in English, the clean city law) that strictly prohibits advertising through billboards, outdoor posters, and even by placing signs on buses!
Modern cities around the world are plagued by billboards, constantly trying to convince consumers to buy products, or to convince voters how to vote on in an upcoming election, and Sao Paolo is no exception.
The citizens became weary, thus, the city decided to see what the city would be like if there were no billboards around. 15,000 billboards were taken down, and everyone became more aware of the problems with the city.
The billboards often hid poorly built homes, and other poverty stricken parts of the city that most people had no idea even existed!
In one case, a Korean businessman was hiring Bolivian immigrants and using them for cheap labor. Once the billboards were cleared up, people were able to see into the back of the store - where workers were sleeping and living in the same room as the one that they worked in!
