You probably wouldn't expect them to give you a free haircut. That is exactly what a mysterious man in Mississippi in the 1940s did though.
A man who the newspapers deemed "the Phantom Barber" would break into houses by slitting window screens and then cut locks of sleeping resident's hair. He was partial to blonde hair of young women. And sometimes he would shear their entire mane off.
Police could not figure out the barber's motive and were desperate for a suspect. Then one night, a man snuck into a couple's house and assaulted them.
They survived but William A. Dolan was arrested for the attack. The police suspected he was the Phantom Barber too, but he was never charged for those acts.
