Tim Burton used 40 live squirrels in the Nut Room scene for the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

Tim Burton remade one of the most classic stories of all time, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and he cast Johnny Depp to play Willy Wonka. The film received mixed reviews, but perhaps if the critics reviewing the film had known a few facts about the CGI in the film, they would have appreciated the movie just a little bit more.

In the film, there is a scene with a large group of squirrels that are searching through nut shells to take out the nuts. The way the squirrels are methodically cracking nuts would make someone who was watching the film think it was CGI! In reality, 40 live squirrels were used to film this scene. The squirrels were trained to crack open a nut shell and place it in a designated location for the scene. It took 10 weeks to train the squirrels, and the training began since birth!

The shots of ALL the squirrels are edited to make it seem like there are a lot more squirrels than there actually are, however any shots of the squirrels up close are authentic!

Do you remember the chocolate river in the movie? What if we told you that the river was made out of 192,000 gallons of faux-melted candy, and Burton looked through 9 different shades of chocolate before Burton settled on the right one!
