World Fairs - large public exhibitions held at different cities around the world - are responsible for some of the most famous structures in the world. The Eiffel Tower, the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, and the Seattle Space Needle. They conjure images of older times. They did begin in the 1700s, but World Fairs are actually still taking place today.
The last one was held in 2012 in Yeosu, South Korea. Before that, in 2010, there was one in Shanghai, China. In 2008, it was held in Zaragoza, Spain. The next one is scheduled for 2015 in Milan, Italy. Today, we look to sporting events like World Cups and the Olympics, for international gatherings. World Fairs are still occurring though - see you in Milan in two years.
