Everly, then living in New York, moved to California to be with Rose. Soon enough though, problems began. According to Everly, Rose would frequently beat her. At least once, she ended up in the hospital after a particularly violent episode. Reasons for the beatings varied - Rose was often set off by little things, such as being awoke by a telephone or stubbing his toe.
As is often the cylce of an abusive relationship, these beatings would take place and then the couple would make up. After they were together for 4 years, Rose showed up at Everly's place at 4 AM and proposed to her. He then said that he had a gun in his car and would kill himself if she said no.
The couple married at Cupid's Chapel in Las Vegas. The abuse continued though. Later that year, in November 1990, Everly finally had a enough. She told Rose to look at her because he would never see her again and left. Four years later, she sued him for physical and emotional abuse.
